Following the death of his father, the new King George IV turned his attention from Carlton House to renovating and greatly enlarging Buckingham House as his primary London residence. This coincided with alterations to the planning of Regent Street, and in order to link Regent Street with the Mall, Carlton House was, notwithstanding the huge and controversial expenditure on it, entirely demolished. The Duke of York Steps and the twin Carlton House Terraces stand on its site. In May 1787, the Prince of Wales contritely approached his father, King George III, and persuaded him to provide the money to finish the house.

Once George IV succeeded to the throne, he lost interest in Carlton House, turning his attentions instead to Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. Many of the contents, including the architectural features, were stripped out and moved to other royal palaces. The lower ground floor comprised a suite of low-ceilinged rooms, including a gothic dining room, a library for the Prince, a Chinese drawing room, and a perpendicular gothic conservatory constructed of cast iron and stained glass. An earlier garden design by William Kent had been undertaken for the Prince's grandmother Princess Augusta but had been swept away.
George immediately started work to improve it and the story of his involvement with the building over the next forty-two years is one of financial crisis and mismanagement, changes of mind and direction and some moments of sublime design and decoration. However, the important point is that the site was completely inadequate for what the Prince wanted. It was on a steep slope so there were more stories on the park front than on the street, but most of all it was too small for the prince’s ambitions. The Carlton House is an example of clever spatial configuration, controlled volumes and simple design aesthetic. To overcome the site’s size restrictions a grand double height space has been created, allowing light to flood into the open plan space at the centre of the site.
Sometimes Chinese, sometimes gothic and other times French the interiors were always lavish and executed to the highest standard. When George III became incapacitated Carlton House became the centre of court life at which point tents and temporary structures were erected to host the Prince Regent’s huge parties. When completed, Carlton House was approximately 202 feet (62 m) long, and 130 feet (40 m) deep. Visitors entered through a hexastyle portico of Corinthian columns, which led to a foyer that was flanked on either side by anterooms.
Secluded and private, the small (2,300-square-foot), single-story house needed refurbishing, but it had a tile roof, thick white stucco walls, a beamed cathedral ceiling in the living room and arched doorways throughout. The property also had lush plantings and a swimming pool —all nestled on a quiet cul-de-sac. The subdivided site was purchased in 2006 by Adrian FitzGerald, senior director at Denton Corker Marshall, and his partner Janet Watts, alongside fellow architects Hamish Lyons and Astrid Jenkins, who built next door. ‘We jumped on the opportunity to buy, design, build and occupy! In 1951 and 1952, swiftly attaining stardom, Marilyn had nine films in release—and added no less than three addresses to her biography.
